Last month while he was visiting Indonesia he stated in a speech that our national motto was “E pluribus unum”:

"In the United States, our motto is E pluribus unum — out of many, one."

He was making the point that the two countries had similar mottos. Indonesia’s is:

"Bhennika Tunggal Ika — unity in diversity."

Only problem, the official motto of the USA is actually “In God We Trust”.

On Monday, Members of Congress who are part of the Congressional Prayer Caucus called on President Obama to issue a public correction of this Indonesian reference.

Response: I would say to them- Don’t hold your breath guys. The President rarely acknowledges his mistakes.

I don’t believe that this was the first time that Barack Obama insisted that “E pluribus unum” was our motto. I sort of remember him referring to it in several speeches while he was running for President. The press was so enamored by him at the time that they didn’t dare call him on it.

The President wasn’t even the first one to make this error. When the new $621 million US Capitol Visitor Center opened in December 2008,  "E Pluribus Unum" was prominently displayed as the ‘national motto’. It has since been changed.

A couple of months ago during the election season President Obama quoted from the Declaration of Independence in his stump speech and kept on leaving out the reference– “by their Creator” until it was pointed out and then he mysteriously added it back in with no comment on the last weekend of the campaign.            *Top of the Blog
