Weston,Mo. is a small town with less than 2,000 residents. However, hundreds of people showed up to support the family of First Sgt. Sadell and block members of the Westboro so-called ‘Baptist Church’ from protesting the funeral.
According to some accounts, nearly half of the town showed up early on Saturday armed with patriotic music and American flags to keep the Westboro protesters away from the funeral.
One Weston resident, Rebecca Rooney told reporters:
"We got everybody here early so we could take up all the parking spots. We did that so Mr. Phelps (Westboro leader) wouldn’t have a contingency that was really close."
Since they couldn’t get close to the funeral and they were far outnumbered the Westboro folks left in a hurry.
Sgt.Sadell, age 34, was killed on October 24 in a surprise attack in Afghanistan. He leaves behind a wife and two young sons.
Response: It is really great to see folks rally around this family and keep the hateful Phelps followers from hurting another soldier’s family.
Typically the Westboro family carries signs indicating that the soldier is going to Hell and that God hates America and American soldiers and wants more to die. Not exactly what a grieving family and surviving fellow soldiers need to see.
I hope others take note of this strategy and keep the Westboro vermin from ever getting close enough again to spew their brand of hate at a soldiers funeral.
What really bothers me about this group is that they routinely dispense their hate in the name of God and under the pretense of being a ‘Christian’ church. Plus the news media gives them an incredible amount of publicity. Publicity that at lease in a small measure reflects badly upon the entire Christian Church.
Lots of secular folks see the crazy Westboro Phelps family and really don’t differentiate all that much between them and Biblical Christian churches. They think we are all crazy in varying degrees. They really don’t understand that the Westboro Phelps family is distorting the true teaching and Good news of Jesus Christ.
It is time for faithful Christians to protest the protesters. *Top of the Blog
