An Indian court ruled Thursday that the historical holy site at Ayodhya, India must be divided up between the Muslims and Hindus.

The disputed 64-acre site has been the scene of many a conflict and controversy between Hindus and Muslims. The Hindus believe that it is the birthplace of the Hindu god Ram.

In the 16th century the first Muslim Mughal emperor of India –Babar had a mosque constructed on the site reportedly replacing a Hindus shrine or temple. Then in 1992 angry Hindu mobs destroyed the 16th-century Babri mosque and the battle for control over the site began. The Muslims wanting to rebuild the mosque while Hindus want to erect a new temple or shrine to Ram.

The court decision is suppose to make a way for both to happen on the site. Meanwhile the Muslims are particularly upset over the ruling since 2/3 of the site is to be given to 2 Hindu groups according to the ruling.

Response: It should be interesting to see if the Muslims and Hindus will now work together so that both groups will have a religious presence there.  I doubt it.

The Muslims in particular are unhappy with the ruling and seem to be in no mood to share the site. In fact there is considerable concern that the ruling will result in riots and maybe even violence.            *Top of the blog
