-Internet: "Everybody Pray for Hitchens Day"

by Dr. D ~ September 20th, 2010

Today,  Monday September 20, is one of those informally designated days that have gone viral on the Internet: "Everybody Pray for Hitchens Day"

When asked about it Christopher Hitchens replied that he would not be joining in.

Hitchens is dying of cancer and the effects of his recent chemotherapy are obvious. When asked about his health he had this to say:

"Well, I’m dying, since you asked, but so are you. I’m only doing it more rapidly."

When asked about those who would be praying for him, Hitchens says that they can be broken down into basically three different groups:

1. Those who seem genuinely glad he’s suffering and dying from cancer.

2. Those who want him to become a believer in their religious faith.

3. And those who are asking God to heal him.

To the first group he says:

"’To hell with you’ is the response to the ones who pray for me to go to hell."

To the second he says that he is ruling out any kind of deathbed change of heart:

"’Thanks but no thanks’ is the reply to those who want me to convert and recognize a divinity or deity."

To the third:

"I say it’s fine by me, I think of it as a nice gesture. And it may well make them feel better, which is a good thing in itself."

Response: So there you have it. It is ‘Everybody Pray for Hitchens Day.’ Please join in prayer for a loyal opponent of Christianity and religion in general. I must admit that I like the guy in spite of the fact that I disagree with his stand on God and religion.

I am praying for his recovery and healing, but I must admit that I am also praying that he finds God before it is all over.             *Top of the Blog
