“A mosque near ground zero?”

by Dr. D ~ July 20th, 2010

This week in the Washington Post series “On Faith” the major question posed is:

A mosque near ground zero?

Here’s the intro to the question posted by Elizabeth Tenety:

The New York City community board endorsed the Cordoba House, a community center and mosque planned for construction near Ground Zero.
Significant opposition has emerged against the project. Sarah Palin even weighed in this weekend, tweeting, "Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in interest of healing."
Should there be a mosque near Ground Zero?

Most of the responding writers seem to be in favor of the Mosque.

We have posted several times on this issue and find ourselves opposing the building of the mosque as an offense to many who lost loved ones on 9/11/01. However we also believe in the ‘freedom of religion’ as defined in our Constitution and feel that Muslims should be free to build mosques all over America wherever they want to. Just not at that location.

Rather than force those involved to stop the project it is our feeling that Muslims around the USA should be appealed to to get involved and stop the project. There are suppose to be thousands of moderate peace loving American Muslims that were opposed to the destruction that day. Where are they?

The mosque really does not help the cause of Islam in America. Rather it presents an ‘in your face’ negative example to most Americans. Plus in the Middle East it will actually be seen as a win for the Islamic terrorists especially since they plan on opening the thing on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

Also, according to some accounts most of the money to build the mosque in the first place is coming from Muslims in the Middle East many of which look upon the 9/11 event far more favorably than most Americans.

As offensive as a mosque might be near ‘Ground Zero’ the memorial being built on the 9/11 crash site in Pennsylvania is potentially even more offensive plus the US government- that is all of us taxpayers are paying for it.             *Top of the Blog
