-Will Gay Employment Bill Trump Religious Freedom?

by Dr. D ~ April 24th, 2010

The U.S. Congress will vote soon on a gay rights employment bill called- the Employment Non-Discrimination Act or ENDA. The measure will create special protections for gays and forbid employers from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Churches and allied religious groups are concerned that ENDA could end up overriding religious freedoms in this country. Christian businesses are particularly concerned that the new law would target them.

Austin R. Nimocks an attorney with The Alliance Defense Fund says that the concerns are well warranted:

"A law that would require an organization to retain employees who don’t fulfill that organization’s mission is a dangerous law. It’s like requiring an environmental group to fill up its board with a bunch of lumberjacks or requiring a Democratic senator to hire a bunch of Republican staffers."

Christian groups are asking Representatives in Congress to make sure that strong religious exemptions are placed in the bill to protect churches and Christian non-profit groups. Currently, Christian businesses with over 15 employees will be affected for sure. This could include Christian schools, day care centers, Bible books stores, and Christian publishers unless changes are made in the legislation.               *Top
