The TV show “South Park” is famous for picking on everyone but the Comedy Central network has chosen to censor their current story line because of Muslim threats.
Last week in the show’s 200th episode they depicted the Prophet Muhammad hidden from view in a bear costume with a story line that was to continue in the current episode.
After receiving numerous threats from radical Muslims the network forced a change to this weeks program:
Last night, “South Park” continued the controversial Muhammad storyline, but with a key difference: every instance of the words “Prophet Muhammad” was bleeped out, making the episode practically incomprehensible, especially to anybody who missed the previous week.
The character of Muhammad was once again also hidden from view, covered by a large block labeled “censored.”
A Comedy Central spokesperson confirmed it was the network’s decision to bleep the words….
The story line included all of the Hollywood actors and famous folks that the show has ever made fun of including major religious leaders like Jesus, Moses, and Buddha along with the benign covered up representation of Muhammad.
Response: South Park has always been an irreverent show and that is part of the whole point the writers are always trying to make. No matter, it is alright to make fun of the Pope and Jesus, Moses and the Jews, or Buddha and his folks, you just can’t touch Islam or Muhammad. At least that is the new reality—when it comes to Islam there is no ‘free speech’.
For hundreds of years Muslim countries have curtailed the freedoms of their citizens in the name of Islam. Now the ‘freedom of speech’ in the USA and Western countries is being challenged by Islamic extremists. Terrorist threats are now actually affecting our freedoms and worse yet we are now surrendering without a fight.
Not only that but many have even come up with a wonderful sounding excuse for curtailing our own freedoms by saying that we need to be more ‘tolerant’ and understanding towards Muslims and should not ‘offend’ them.
Let me get this straight. In the name of ‘free speech’ and art it is alright to put crosses in urine, scribble across Bibles, make a laughing stock out of Jesus, and let him have an affair with Mary Magdalene in movies. It is still open season on Christians but when it comes to Islam, there is no free speech—it has been voluntarily surrendered supposedly in the name of tolerance? But really we no longer want to stand up and fight for our freedoms.
I fear for our future when we so easily dismiss our freedoms. The future is diminished indeed when a TV network decides to capitulate to implied ‘inconvenient’ terrorism without so much as a whimper. This response will do nothing but breed more of the same—Islamic terrorism wins—Freedom loses. *Top
