-Chilly Visit between Obama and Netanyahu Resolves Nothing

The usual White House photo-op between heads of state was denied and it speaks volumes about how the talks between Israeli PM Netanyahu and Pres. Obama went.

In addition there were no official statements made by either party. Also a blackout seems to be in place where none of the participants or staff are willing to go on record.

The only conclusions that we can draw from the meetings is that they did not go well at all. The major sticking point is the building of new Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem and there doesn’t seem to be any movement on that front. Both Israel and the Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their own. Pres. Obama seems to be favoring the Palestinians on that issue and was hoping to get Israel to cave in at least on East Jerusalem. Obviously that was not the case.

Meanwhile, the Israeli press seems to be rather critical of the way their Prime Minister was treated and question why Netanyahu went in the first place since it seemed to be a ‘command performance’ where he and his entourage were treated as inferiors. Some examples:

"Instead of a reception as a guest of honour, Netanyahu was treated as a problem child, an army private ordered to do laps around the base for slipping up at roll call."

"There is no humiliation exercise that the Americans did not try on the prime minister and his entourage. Bibi received in the White House the treatment reserved for the president of Equatorial Guinea"

Response: So there you have it. Netanyahu refused to follow Obama’s orders and the Prez was obviously ticked and wasn’t a very gracious host at all. This is the lowest point in the relations between the two countries that I can think of during my lifetime which spans the entire existence of the Jewish state.

It really couldn’t happen at a worse time with the specter of Iran’s nuclear ambitions on the horizon.

**UPDATE 3/26: Netanyahu reportedly made this comment today in closed meetings with his government ministers:  “I, myself, plan to continue building in Jerusalem as all previous prime ministers did before me.”               *Top

Thank you for the update, I was not aware of how this meeting went. It does seem to be a lowpoint indeed. Thanks for the good thoughts.
