-Turkey, Syria, and Iran: A New Islamist Axis Rises Up Against Israel

Here is the latest proof that a new axis of Islamic power is on the rise in the Middle East.
The governments of Turkey, Syria, and Iran announced on Tuesday that they were calling for the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to hold an emergency meeting on recent Palestinian-Israeli developments.
In October I had observed that there was a new Axis of Islamic power rising in the Middle East that was going substantially unnoticed by the Western press. Turkey, Syria , and Iran had completed major treaties of realignment both economically and politically.
Now here they are working in concert together against Israel. This really doesn’t bode well for the future in that part of the world. As long as Iran was somewhat separated from everyone else, the radical Islamist cause that they represent could not affect a whole lot. Then the Iranians and Syria became involved and directly supported Hamas and Hezbollah. The combination was welded into a formidable enemy against Israel in the last Lebanon conflict. Now Turkey has joined the axis and this changes everything. Any future conflict will be considerably more severe.
Since the founding of Israel in 1948, Turkey has been substantially a ‘secular’ Muslim state that stayed out of every one of the wars against Israel. But with their current Islamist government they are now choosing to side against Israel at a time when a potential war is on the horizon over Iran’s development of nuclear weapons. This could change the entire balance of power in the Middle East.
Up to this point Turkey has been an ally of the US and Israel but that no longer seems to be the case. Also the Obama administration is rather ambivalent at the best if not down right negative toward Israel. Israel is probably in a more dangerous situation in 2010 than they have ever been since 1948. Meanwhile the Palestinians are keeping up the pressure and gaining sympathy in the world press.
Who is for Israel now? Who is really for Israel? Will the US still support them in the midst of a future conflict? Time for those of us who support the country to remember to continually pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
