Is Costa Rica Really the ‘Happiest Nation on Earth’? Nicholas Kristof claimed so in a New York Times Op-Ed piece on Wednesday (1/6/10).

What qualifies it for that heady position—a poll of course. When asked if they were basically happy with their life, Costa Ricans scored higher than any other nation. The poor ‘happiness’ destitute USA came in 20th in comparison.

Then Kristof goes on to cite probable reasons for Costa Rican contentment—they don’t have an army and spend the extra cash on a good education. Also, woman’s rights are way ahead in that land plus they score at the top of any ecological test—a liberal paradise! No wonder lefty Kristof is singing praises of this Central American country.

Meanwhile, the terrible evil USA scored 114th on the ecological survey.

Here’s a few things that Nicholas forgot to mention. The good o’l USA spends more $money per capita on education than any other nation in the world unfortunately with less return on our money probably because of the unionized liberal control of schools across the entire land. Also one is left to wonder actually how free Costa Rica would remain accept for the implied protection of the American armed forces? They don’t need an army because we pay the freight.

All you really need to know is Later down in the article.  The Dominican Republic ranks second in the environmental “Happy Planet Index” while Mexico and Columbia score high in the ‘happy/contentment’ poll yet tens of millions have immigrated from those ‘happy’ nations looking for a better life in the United States. Something is definitely wrong in Denmark—no actually with these liberal polls.
