-Is the New EU President Anti-Turkey?

We are not talking about thanksgiving dinner here. The leaders and major newspapers in the country of Turkey reacted negatively to the recent appointment of Herman Van Rompuy as the first President of the European Union. Turkey has been trying to gain full membership in the Union for years and Van Rompuy is said to be in opposition to their inclusion.

In fact on the subject of Turkey’s possible entry into the EU he was quoted in December 2004 as saying:

“Turkey is not a part of Europe and will never be part of Europe.”

“The universal values which are in force in Europe, and which are also fundamental values of Christianity, will lose vigor with the entry of a large Islamic country such as Turkey.”

Response: It will be interesting to watch whether Van Rompuy’s appointment actually affects Turkey’s ambition to be part of the EU. It might actually drive Turkey to look more towards the Middle East instead and continue their recent re-alignment with Iran and Syria with a view toward putting together a new Muslim Union and Caliphate.

Bible students will be interested in following this development no matter where it leads. Many Bible scholars have looked at the rise of the new EU government as a portent for a possible end-times scenario. While others following Joel Richardson’s lead are more concerned about the rise of a new Islamic empire with Turkey in the lead.

Recent developments on both fronts will excite end-time Bible watchers, myself included.
