-Oregon Case Supports View That Gov. Health Care Could Lead to State Supported Euthanasia

by Dr. D ~ August 5th, 2009

image Last year Oregon Health plan bureaucrats informed Barbara Wagner that the state would not cover her doctor prescribed chemo treatment for cancer but they would be more than happy to approve funds for a doctor assisted suicide. Here’s a response in Barbara’s own words:

"I’m not ready, I’m not ready to die, I’ve got things I’d still like to do."
"I told them, I said, ‘Who do you guys think you are?’ You know, to say that you’ll pay for my dying, but you won’t pay to help me possibly live longer?’.

After the case was publicized one Oregon Health official replied that Wagner had an "unfortunate interpretation" of the letter sent to her. But how else could anyone interpret what the bureaucrats were telling her except—we will pay for the drugs and a physician to kill you but not for the Chemo treatment that could save your life. After all, chemotherapy costs a whole lot more!

Since Oregon allows for doctor assisted euthanasia, the Health plan includes that treatment among the procedures covered by the state plan so ended up offering it as an unfortunate alternative in her case.

Is this what we have to look forward to if Obama Health Care is passed? A federal plan that will have bureaucrats deciding on treatments rather than doctors–offering state supported euthanasia instead of chemotherapy? Offering older seniors a pleasant send off like in the old 70’s movie Soylent Green? That is what this Washington Times editorial claims: “A euthanasia mandate: Bureaucrats could decide who lives or dies
