The New York City Council Voted to add two Muslim holidays to the official public school calendar. Major Bloomberg opposed the designation and said he planned on blocking its implementation. The mayor told reporters that not all religious holidays could be accommodated, only those with:

“a very large number of kids who practice.”

“If you close the schools for every single holiday, there won’t be any school. Educating our kids requires time in the classroom, and that’s the most important thing to us.”

Response: The Muslims are coming of age in New York City and obviously beginning to exert political influence. However, Mayor Bloomberg does have a point. The Muslim officials claim that 12% of the children in the public schools are Muslim. However, other sources put it closer to 10% or even less.

As it now stands, Muslim students can already stay home and observe the holidays without forcing the other 90% of the students to take them off also. If Muslim holidays are going to be ‘officially’ recognized where do we draw the line? What about Buddhist or Hindu holidays, or even Scientologist what ever?

The religious holidays that are officially recognized across the country are in place because they’ve been part of the American cultural traditions for hundreds of years. Islam still has a long ways to go before it really becomes part of the American cultural scene. In fact I am sure that 99%+ of all the Americans who aren’t Muslim would have a hard time naming even one Muslim holiday—unlike Christmas, Easter, Hanukkah, or even Passover.
