-Solar Eclipse Brings Out the Tourists and the Superstitious Nuts

by Dr. D ~ July 21st, 2009

image A Complete solar eclipse begins Wednesday and can be best seen in parts of Asia. Thousands of tourists are camping out to better see the event while Indian and Chinese Astrologers are predicting doom.

For thousands of years ancient religions and civilizations considered eclipses of the Sun to be portents of doom and destruction. In ancient Hindu mythology, the two demons Rahu and Ketu are said to "swallow" the sun during eclipses, snuffing out its life-giving light and even causing food to become inedible and water undrinkable.

Even today in the 21st century, Many pregnant women in India are planning on staying indoors to prevent possible birth defects, and some are asking their doctors to help them make sure that they don’t give birth on that ‘unlucky’ day.

Meanwhile, Indian soothsayers and astrologers are predicting that the event will bring with it a rise in community and regional violence in the days following the eclipse, particularly in areas where it can be seen–India, China and other Southeast Asian nations.

The ancient Chinese religions always associated these events with doom and the death of emperors or the beginning of major wars. There is even a current Chinese website that is getting all sorts of attention with similar predictions:

"The probability for unrest or war to take place in years when a solar eclipse happens is 95 percent."

Wow, not too over-the–top for you? I am planning on the 5% myself. But one can always find a good war somewhere in the world if you need to.

For a mere $1,600 you can board a three-hour charter flight from New Delhi on a Boeing 737-700 and see the eclipse ‘up close and personal’ from 41,000 feet. However, beware—according to the astrologers this is not exactly a good time to be in the air!

image Response: It is interesting that in spite of modern education and science in India and China ancient superstitions are still taken seriously by millions of people.
