-India: Attack on Christian Relief Camp in Orissa

Hindu radicals attacked a Christian relief camp in Kandhamal, Orissa, India on Monday night  injuring a few in the process. The authorities are supposed to be protecting the Christians until the Indian elections are completed this month.

One of the major reasons cited for Hindu persecution of Christians in Orissa is the continued growth of the Christian community which made the former Dalets (untouchables) a rising potential political power in the area. The Hindu extremists continue to intimidate the Christian community with a hope that they will not exercise their right to vote.

A radical Hindu political party is running the state of Orissa and most authorities are sympathetic to the Hindu cause in that state. They are usually slow to react in protecting the Christian community—this still seems to be the case. We need to remember these Christians in our prayers.       *Top
