-Obama’s Regulatory Nominee Calls for an Internet “Fairness Doctrine”

by Dr. D ~ April 27th, 2009

image WASHINGTON – Barack Obama’s nominee for "regulatory czar" has advocated a "Fairness Doctrine" for the Internet that would require opposing opinions be linked and also has suggested angry e-mails should be prevented from being sent by technology that would require a 24-hour cooling off period.

President Obama has nominated a close friend –Cass Sunstein–from the University of Chicago Law School to head the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. He has been rather prolific in his suggestions for improving the Internet, believing that there is too much freedom on the Net and that it needs to be better controlled by the government:

"A system of limitless individual choices, with respect to communications, is not necessarily in the interest of citizenship and self-government. Democratic efforts to reduce the resulting problems ought not be rejected in freedom’s name."

In some of his writings in the past he has suggested that mandatory "electronic sidewalks" should be imposed by the government–which would display links to opposing viewpoints next to blog and website articles. Sunstein also has some unique ideas for government control of ‘angry’ email. <Read the whole article>

Response: It is hard to imagine that Sunstein would be successful in implementing some of his ideas right now. However, putting someone like this in charge of regulating information which includes the Internet is incredibly dangerous. He doesn’t seem to really care for ‘freedom of speech’ and other constitutional rights—looking on them as ‘negative rights’ that block progressives from making ‘necessary’ changes. He is on record supporting judicial activism to overcome ‘fundamentalist’ views of ‘rights’ and the constitution. A very dangerous fellow indeed!
