-Archbishop: Gov’t Ignored Orissa Violence Because the Victims were Poor ‘Untouchables’?

by Dr. D ~ January 29th, 2009

Orissa

(-Orissa location via Wikipedia)

Catholic Archbishop Raphael Cheenath claims that the Indian government ignored the horrific anti-Christian persecution in the state of Orissa for months because most of the victims were from the poorest and lowest rung of Indian society–Dalets, the so-called ‘untouchables’ according to the Hindu the caste system.

The government didn’t even bother to send a fact-finding team to Orissa till after the violence against Christians had already been raging for nearly two and a half months. Meanwhile, the attacks which began in August continued unabated and resulted in more than 60 Christians deaths, 18,000, wounded; 181 churches burned or destroyed; 4,500 Christian homes burned; and more than 50,000 Christians, displaced with more than 30,000 still in refugee camps or hiding in the jungle.

The violence started when a Hindu religious leader was murdered and Hindu radicals insisted on blaming it on the Christians even though a Maoist rebel group had publicly claimed responsibility for the murder. The Hindu fanatics began destroying Christian homes and churches in retaliation.

One good result coming out of the persecution, India’s Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of the Orissa Christians, fully supporting religious freedom and human rights in the country. The court also ordered the Orissa state government to protect Christians and compensate those who lost homes during the attacks.

Response: The linked article contains one of the best and most concise explanations that I have read yet on the different factors that contributed to the Orissa persecution of the Christian community. One unintended result of the attacks, Christians of all different denominations–Catholics, Protestants, and Pentecostals– are far more unified in Orissa than they have ever been before–Praise God!            *Top

A false claim and accusation, no Christian church or organization would accept new members on a forced basis, it is totally against Christian teaching and beliefs. This accusation has been used as an excuse to persecute Christians.
