-New Stimulus Bill: $Millions on Condoms and Family Planning?

The new Obama $825 billion stimulus bill that is supposed to get the economy going has provisions for potentially spending $100’s of Millions for contraceptives and birth control. It opens up a wide door and makes so called ‘family planning’ services available to anyone regardless of income through Medicaid. No one can really determine the total cost of the program since there is no real limit. It could run into $100’s of millions and the services might well include the ‘morning-after’ pill since the applicable contraceptives are not clearly specified.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi is on record unabashedly supporting the ‘condom’ boondoggle with the following comments on ABC’s This Week when asked by host George Stephanopoulos how it can possibly help the economy:
“Contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.”
Meanwhile, since the controversy has hit the proverbial fan, President Obama has disowned the bill and thrown it under the bus.
Response: One week in office and already in the midst of a ‘social engineering’ controversy. President Obama swept into office promising change in Washington. Apparently Speaker Pelosi didn’t get that memo–the one which called for change and bi-partisanship. The bill is chocked full of democratic earmarks–a laundry list of stuff that Nancy Pelosi and friends couldn’t get past Bush and the GOP in the last 8 years.
Speaker Pelosi says that birth control will reduce government expenses out of one corner of her mouth while out of the other side she will soon be supporting immigration reform because we need more workers in this country?
Nevertheless, there is no possible way that birth control and family planning can stimulate the economy any time soon if ever. Caterpillar is laying of 22,000 workers how does this help? Millions of folks are losing their homes and their jobs how does this help them?
Not only that, it provides tax-payer funding for programs that many Americans believe that the government has no business being involved in. Sounds like business as usual to me in Washington DC!
**UPDATE: 1/28/09- Birth control funding dropped from bill due to adverse publicity! *Top
