-Republican Women to Boycott Oprah
by Dr. D ~ September 13th, 2008
The Florida Federation of Republican Women have announced that they are boycotting The Oprah Winfrey Show and urging their members to cancel their subscriptions to the celebrity’s magazine, O, after the talk-show host decided not to have Gov. Sarah Palin as a guest on her show before the election.
Winfrey has made it clear that she endorses Barack Obama for president and has made several campaign appearances with him. The Republican women are particularly unhappy with Oprah because over the years she has supported women’s issues and women’s rights, however, now when a woman is running for VP they feel somewhat betrayed. According to Cindy Graves, a vice president of FFRW:
"This [story] is…a women’s issue, again, regardless of whether you support Governor Palin or you don’t. And we feel as though that Oprah, bless her, has always been someone we respected and we were just so surprised and shocked that that would be her stance."
FFRW president Linda Ivell, in a press statement said that the decision not to bring Palin onto the show until after the election means the popular talk-show host is going to:
"…sit out the greatest political moment in the history of Republican women since suffrage."
Response: I am sure that the Florida women are not the only ones that feel this way. Oprah is really risking her credibility and could end up being branded and diminished by her obvious foray into partisan politics.
