-Britain Scraps Christian Blasphemy Law

by Dr. D ~ March 8th, 2008

image On Wednesday, the House of Lords in the UK voted on Wednesday to repeal the so called ‘blasphemy laws’ which made it a crime to commit blasphemy against Christianity.

Baroness Kay Andrews, a leader in the upper house, noted:

“We do not need to rely on such a law to remind ourselves that the sacred still has a role to play in today’s society.”

She was also quoted in another article:

“It is crystal-clear that the offenses of blasphemy and blasphemous libel are unworkable in today’s society,”  adding that “as long as this law remains on the statute books, it hinders the UK’s ability to challenge oppressive blasphemy laws in other jurisdictions.”

Response: Good. The UK is ‘officially’ a Christian nation with a rather large secular population. The laws have become untenable in post-Christian societies. Also, Christians are not well served by laws that remind one of the radical Islamic thin-skinned over-the-top responses.

Case-in-point, the recent ‘teddy bear’ incident in the Sudan which is said to have lead to the repeal of the British laws, since the Sudanese government pointed out that the UK also had ‘blasphemy laws’.            *Top
