-USA: Jan. 16 -Religious Freedom Day

by Dr. D ~ January 16th, 2008

President Bush proclaimed January 16, 2008 as: "Religious Freedom Day"

The president called it a day for all Americans:

“…to reflect on the great blessing of religious liberty, endeavor to preserve this freedom for future generations, and commemorate this day with appropriate events and activities.”

In addition he stated:

“In an era during which an unprecedented number of nations have embraced individual freedom, we have also witnessed the stubborn endurance of religious repression. Religious freedom belongs not to any one nation, but to the world, and my Administration continues to support freedom of worship at home and abroad. On Religious Freedom Day and throughout the year, we recognize the importance of religious freedom and the vital role it plays in spreading liberty and ensuring human dignity.”

Response: It is either ironic or purposeful that the president chose to make this proclamation while visiting Saudi Arabia. The Saudis probably have among the worst records of any country when it comes to allowing ‘freedom of religion’.

Certainly those of us who are people of faith can be thankful to God for our freedom to worship as we see fit in this great land.

Even those who are not believers of any sort should be thankful to be living in a country where they have freedom not to worship unlike places like Saudi Arabia where ‘religious police’ force everyone to obey religious laws.            *Top
