-Episcopal Battle over Church Property

by Dr. D ~ January 12th, 2008

The Episcopal Church in the USA has been locked in a theological battle now for several years over gay clergy and unions. Now there is an on-going battle in Virginia over the property of 11 churches which joined the Convocation of Anglicans in North America. A new Anglican group sponsored by Nigerian Archbishop Peter Akinola. The contesting church organizations have spent over $ 2 million in legal fees battling over the church buildings.

Response: I would like to be able to say: "Stop it!" What does the Episcopal Church USA gain if they get the 11 empty buildings and force the members who paid for them to worship elsewhere? This lawsuit causes nothing but bad will and hurts the mission of the church. Meanwhile, millions of $ are wasted and everyone involved looks like a bunch of hypocrites. This is not good for the denomination nor is it good for Christianity in general. There is no upside to this battle. The denominational leaders and the church leaders need to come to some kind of mutual agreement.            *Top
