The Pope Says That Religion Can Never Justify Violence

by Dr. D ~ October 23rd, 2007

Pope Benedict in an address at Naples, which included many World religious leaders in the audience, proclaimed that religion should never be used to justify violence:

“In a world wounded by conflicts, where violence is justified in God’s name, it’s important to repeat that religion can never become a vehicle of hatred, it can never be used in God’s name to justify violence,’ he said. ‘On the contrary, religions can and must offer precious resources to build a peaceful humanity, because they speak about peace in the heart of man.”

The major religious leaders present included: Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians; Yona Metzger, a chief Rabbi from Israel; Din Syamsuddin, chairman of Muhammadiyah, the second largest Islamic organization in Indonesia; and Ayatollah Sayed Mousavi Bojnourdi, head of an Islamic study center in Iran; Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury (Anglican head leader); Rev. Samuel Kobia, head of the World Council of Churches; plus representatives from the Buddhist, Shinto, Hindu and Zoroastrian religions.

The leaders were there for the 21st annual peace meeting sponsored by Sant’Egidio Community, a Catholic organization. The Pope also addressed the on-going mafia crime problem that continues to plague the city of Naples.

Comments: We certainly do agree with the Pope’s statement. Hopefully all the leaders were paying attention and also agree to the point where they are willing to take a stand against those who continue advocate violence in the name of religion.          *Top
