Anglican Communion Seems to be Headed for Disunity

by Dr. D ~ August 22nd, 2007

In speaking about the current state of affairs in the 77 million member Anglican Communion, Archbishop Peter Akinola of Nigeria sees little hope of agreement.

He contends that the Episcopal Church in the USA and the Canadian counterparts in the Anglican Church of Canada have departed from the faith and have expressed little or no intentions to continue Along a ‘Biblically based’ path together. Here are some selected comments made by Archbishop Akinola:

“Their intention is clear; they have chosen to walk away from the biblically-based path we once all walked together.”

“They claim to have ‘progressed’ beyond the clear teaching of the Scriptures and they have not hidden their intention to lead others to these same conclusions. They have even boasted that they are years ahead of others in fully understanding the truth of the Holy Scriptures and the nature of God’s love.”

“We want unity but not at the cost of relegating Christ to the position of another ‘wise teacher’ who can be obeyed or disobeyed,” he said. “We earnestly desire the healing of our beloved Communion but not at the cost of re-writing the Bible to accommodate the latest cultural trend.”

The Episcopal Church USA was given a deadline of September 30, by the communion to respond to the concerns of the Anglican Communion that they were departing from the faith in their consecration of Gay unions and their ordination of actively Gay Bishops. By all indications, both the USA church and its Canadian counterpart seem determined to continue in the direction that they have chosen in disregard for the rest of the Communion and the Scriptures themselves.

It does seem to be a real possibility that there will be some kind of fracture in the Anglican Community. Already there are many conservative Episcopal Churches in America which are positioning themselves to leave the USA Church and be under the supervision of one of the African Bishops.             *Top
