Tibetans Protest Chinese Domination of Their Religion

by Dr. D ~ August 4th, 2007

Some 200 Tibetans protested and demonstrated at an event celebrating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the People’s liberation Army. Apparently the Tibetans do not feel very liberated since the Chinese government has taken control of the Tibetan religion and installed their own Lama to head the Tibetan Buddhist sect.

One local man, Runggye Adak, climbed upon the stage during the event and grabbed the microphone and called for the return of the Dalai Lama. This started the protest with hundreds supporting what Adak had to say. The following was one of his statements:

“If we cannot invite the Dalai Lama home, we will not have freedom of religion and happiness in Tibet.”

The Chinese government is particularly sensitive to civil unrest in their country while they are preparing for the upcoming summer Olympic games. The Chinese government continues to try and control all aspects of life in their country including religion. The Chinese have tried to control and change the Tibetan culture and religion since their take over of the mountain country in 1950. Obviously, this continues to be a sore point with the Tibetan people.            *Top
