By Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett (Indianapolis, Indiana: Wiley Publishing, Inc., 2008, 220 pages)

The ultimate book on how to make money while blogging. Both of the writers are successful bloggers who make a 6 figured income doing what they love to do best.

Darren and Chris map out a number of different strategies that work in bringing more traffic and authority to a blog. They key in on the importance of producing and consistently posting good content. Then how to promote and market a blog. Finally, they list a number of different ways to make money blogging.

This is a valuable book even for folks who just want to make a better blog. But it is particularly useful for those of us who would like to at least produce a blog that will pay for itself or even make a second income. For those who would like to be blogging fulltime, it is essential.

Besides, the book is full of personal experiences from two guys who have made it all work and on top of it all it is actually fun to read. *Top

By Susan Gunelius (Hoboken,NJ: Wiley Publishing, Inc., 2009, 362 pages)

The coming of this book is long overdue—a definitive manual on using Blogger. This is bound to become the essential book for those using the Blogger program whether one is starting out in the blogosphere or has been around a while. There is something for everyone in this volume—if you now use Blogger or intend to in the future.

The book is particularly helpful for those starting out giving detailed help on how to set up your Blogger blog. The writer also gives excellent advise in how to grow a blog and increase readership. I found some of her suggestions to be helpful even though I use WordPress for most of my blogs and have been around for close to four years now.

Even if you have been using Blogger for some time now I believe that the book is full of good information that would be useful for even intermediate bloggers. Ms. Gunelius give detailed info on where to find new Blogger Templates and the procedure for installing them on a Blogger blog. She also gives able advise for those who would like to make some money and monetize their blogs using not only Google’s AdSense but she has a survey of all the different options available.

She also goes into using all the different Google Gadgets and includes a section how to create and publish podcasts and video on Blogger. At the end of the book is a chapter on the “Ten common Blogger Problems and Possible Solutions”—this section might be worth the price of the book by itself if you have ever experienced any of the problems listed here. Also at the back is a very helpful Glossary which features most of the common internet and blogging terms that can be so confusing to those starting out.

Overall, an excellent book on Blogger but also on blogging itself. The initial price ($24.95 US) might be steep but well worth it in the long run.

This is a great book for those starting out with WordPress. McNulty goes into detail on every facet of properly setting up a new WordPress blog. It has lots of illustrations to demonstrate every step. A real find for any beginner–wish this book was around 3 years ago when I set up my first blog, it sure would have been helpful and a real time saver.

The author does an exceptional job at explaining everything and making it all rather simple to understand. Valuable for WordPress.com bloggers but especially for WordPress.org users–if you don’t know the difference, McNulty will explain it to you. <<Read the rest at Blogging Ministry>>

By Ben Norman (Southam,UK: Computer Step, In Easy Steps series, 2007, 192 pages)

All of the Google tools and services are mentioned and examples are given on how to sign up, set up and use Google stuff for the benefit of your website or blog. While the emphasis is on websites in general, nearly all of the info. is equally valid and useful for bloggers.

Most of the chapters in the book are about SEO–that is, how to properly optimize your website in order to get noticed by Google and receive the highest ranking possible from their search engine. This was quite valuable for me in that there was some information about Google SEO that I really wasn’t aware of.

Already I have put a few of the suggestions to use and have seen an increase of traffic to my blogs in the matter of a week or so.

The book was very easy to understand and had numerous illustrations and valuable tips to demonstrate info. in each chapter. Also there is a valuable glossary at the back of the book and the index is complete enough that I will be able to find particular referral and references from the book in the future. Considering all of the valuable info., the book was well worth the price and the reading time invested. *Top

“How People Blogging Are Changing the World and How You Can Join Them”

By Bob Walsh (Berkeley, CA: Apress, 2007, 351 pages)

An excellent book on why one should blog and how to get started. Bob suggests that one starts by reading lots of blogs and become initially engaged in the blogoshere by leaving comments. Next he gives suggestions about getting started publishing a blog with Blogger, Windows Live, and TypePad and evaluates which blogging platform might be best for you considering your goals and what type of blog you wish to publish.

In Part 2, he addresses how to grow a blog and how to use various tools in promotion and turning your blog into a success. There are chapters on professional blogging and how to monetize and make money through a blog, also a chapter on company blogging.

The book has a very good and detailed chapter on adding podcasting to a blog. This was the best I have seen in a starting book on the subject.

Part 3, looks to the future and evaluates where blogging may be heading. This really is an informed prediction. However for me, who am somewhat in the intermediate stage after 2 years of blogging, the chapters on podcasting and monetizing a blog were well worth the price of the book and then some.

"A comprehensive, step-by-step guide on how to set up, customize, and market your blog using WordPress"

By Hasin Hayder (Birmingham, UK: Packt Pub. Ltd., 2006, 289 pages)

This really is the most ‘complete’ book on the WordPress blogging platform. It has chapters on all the elementary stuff for beginners, how to get started and how to use all the basic aspects of the program. It also offers plenty to keep those that have been around a while busy.

There are chapters about the WordPress themes. How to choose a good theme to start, modify a theme for the intermediate user, and how to program a new theme from the ground up for those who are advanced.

The chapter on plug-ins and creating widgets was particularly helpful to me.

This book has become my new ‘WordPress Bible’ and stands alongside WordPress 2 as necessary equipment for all WordPress bloggers. I have already turned to it a couple of times for help with excellent results. This is not a cheap book (list $39.99 US) but I have found it to be more than worth it. *Top

This is by far the definitive book on the ‘Movable Type’ blogging program. There are chapters on beginning with Movable Type- from installing the program to using all the basic features. Then there are chapters on customizing the program, custom templates, and adding ‘plug-ins’. The book also covers advanced procedures, upgrades, and troubleshooting.

Anyone using the Movable Type program will find the book worth far more than its price. The $29.99 list is expensive indeed, however, the time saved and the tips gained in 554 pages will make it seem rather cheap. *Top
