Q: Gen 4: 3-5 God looked favorable upon Abel’s offering but not Cain’s. Why? It doesn’t seem fair to me.

A: Actually verse 7 gives us a clue. Cain was really not trying to do what was right but just trying to get by. Verse 3 says that he merely brought some fruit as an offering while it says in verse 4 that Abel selected his offering the best fat portions from the first born of his flock. So on one hand there is an attitude difference.

Secondly, a blood sacrifice was what God instituted as an offering for sin. When Adam and Eve fell in the Garden God gave them the animal skins to wear. That was the first blood sacrifice for sin.

So in essence Cain was really starting his own religion here—the First Church of Fruit Sacrifice.

The blood sacrifice was an important feature of ancient religion instituted by God which was suppose to be a foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice of God’s own Son on the cross.

-Q: What if Adam and Eve never ate from the Tree—would they still be in the Garden? Then what about the rest of us since childbirth seems to be a resulting punishment?

-A: It is possible they would still be there. However the Biblical record doesn’t really speak to that possibility one way or another except when they fell they were kicked out of the place.

What about the rest of us?

It merely says in 3:16 that childbearing would now be painful not that it was a punishment. There is no way to tell from the Bible whether or not the rest of us would have been born or not.

But it does seem to imply that before the fall birthing would not have been so painful. This actually lends credence to the possibility that all of us might have eventually been born in the Garden of Eden and in far better conditions than we now live in. Of course this is speculation since the Bible doesn’t actually confirm this anywhere.

A: God did not create evil. He did create Satan who had been his highest angel but became evil by choice. He also created the man and the woman and gave them the freedom to choose—to make choices. It is by the choice of Adam and Eve that evil came into the world.

Q: In Genesis 1, we read that God created light before He created the Sun. What is this light? -Chris T.

A: Actually the Sun or stars for that matter are not the only sources of light in the universe. Last night I flipped on the ‘light’ switch when it got dark. But more seriously, I believe that the Bible itself has the best answer right at the back of the book. This is the bookend to the Genesis story. Turn to Rev. 22: 5:

“There will be no night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign forever and ever.”

There was light in the world because God himself supplied it and said so—Let there be light and there was. *Top

Q: What was the ‘tree of the knowledge of good and evil’ in the Garden of Eden and why weren’t Adam and Eve allowed to eat from it?

A: The Bible doesn’t really actually explain what the tree is though it does seem rather self explanatory. Once they did eat from the tree Adam and Eve realized that they were naked which they hadn’t noticed before—their innocence was gone forever.

While the Bible doesn’t really tell us why they weren’t suppose to eat from it the inference is that they were not ready or adequately prepared to handle the choices between good and evil . *Top

A: Gen. 1 gives us the summary and the general order of creation while chapter 2 goes back and has a more detailed account of life in the Garden. Gen 1: 27 merely states that man- both male and female were created. Gen 2: 21-25 fills in the details of the creation of Eve—the first woman. *Top
