-Putin: World Leaders Should Unite to End Christian Persecution

by Dr. D ~ August 8th, 2013

English: THE KREMLIN, MOSCOW. President Vladim...

(Putin with Russian Church leaders: Wikipedia)

In a meeting with Orthodox Christian leaders in Moscow last week Russian President Vladimir Putin actually said some things that I agree with.

He noted that religious minorities, Christians in particular, were being persecuted around the world (especially in the Middle East and in North Africa) and voiced his support for world leaders uniting together to address that problem. From  LifeSiteNews:

MOSCOW, August 1, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Vladimir Putin has urged the world’s political leaders to stop the violent persecutions against Christians that have erupted in many Middle Eastern countries.

“This pressing problem should be a subject of close attention for the entire international community,” Putin said. “It is especially important today to make efforts to prevent intercultural and interreligious conflicts, which are fraught with the most serious upheavals.”

Putin and the Russian Federation also recently passed a law against making it illegal to promote homosexuality as normal. It was strongly supported by the leaders of the Russian Orthodox Church which Putin cited as providing the Russian people and culture with a moral foundation:

Putin added Thursday that the Church was giving Russians a moral compass when so many were looking for help. “Today when people are once again searching for moral support, millions of our compatriots see it in religion,” he said. “They trust the wise, pastoral word of the Russian Orthodox Church.”

He added that it was the Church that was ultimately responsible for the development and rise of “culture and education” in Russia over the last 1,000 years. “The adoption of Christianity became a turning point in the fate of our fatherland, made it an inseparable part of the Christian civilization and helped it turn into one of the largest world powers,” Putin said.

Response: There are very few times that I can remember where I have actually agreed with anything that Putin has said or done but he is correct in his concern over the persecution of Christians and religious minorities.  Meanwhile President Obama and his State department has seldom if ever commented on the persecution of Christians particularly in Middle East. In fact his administration is now supporting the rebels which were and still are actively involved in killing and persecuting Christians in Syria.

Also in responding to the new law that makes it illegal to promote homosexuality in Russia, President Obama cancelled a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin and commented that forbidding anyone from promoting same-sex marriage “violates basic morality.” So I guess according to Pres. Obama all who oppose same-sex marriage “violates basic morality?”

I don’t support the Russian dictatorial law the way it is written but does it really violate some kind of ‘basic morality?’ Who defined this so-called ‘basic morality’ anyway and where did it come from? Obviously this is different from the Judea-Christian Biblical morality that was the basis for Western civilization for nearly 20 centuries.            *Top
