A student at Sonoma State University in California was ordered to remove her Christian cross necklace by a staff member on campus. Here’s the story from Fox News:
A Sonoma State University student has filed a religious accommodation request after she said she was ordered to remove her cross necklace because it might offend other students. …
On June 27, Jarvis was working for the university’s Associated Students Productions at a student orientation fair for incoming freshmen. During the event, her supervisor directed her to remove the cross necklace.
Sasser said the supervisor told her that the chancellor had a policy against wearing religious items and further explained “that she could not wear her cross necklace because it might offend others, …
Note that a university spokeswoman admitted that the supervisor was entirely wrong to ask Jarvis to remove her necklace and that an apology was forthcoming from the university president.
Response: It is ironic that a university that boasts of it’s diversity and tolerance would be caught up in an obvious case of religious discrimination. I submit to you that if Audrey Jarvis was wearing any other kind of religious symbol other than a Christian one it would have never happened.
Increasingly on college and university campuses across America, Christians are facing real discrimination and intolerance while diversity is championed and tolerance and is granted to every other religion and philosophy except maybe Judaism. Jewish students are also finding that tolerance is increasingly lacking for their number on campuses that have a large Muslim student body. *Top
