President Obama continued his assault on freedom of religion in America this week by threatening to veto the the National Defense Authorization Act 2014.
The President says that he ‘strongly objects’ to an amendment attached to the bill that supports religious liberty for those in the US military.
Here’s a quote from Todd Starnes of Fox news concerning this development:
The Obama Administration “strongly objects” to a proposed amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act on Wednesday that would have protected the religious rights of soldiers – including evangelical Christian service members who are facing growing hostility towards their religion.
The amendment was authored by Rep. John Fleming, R-La. It would have “required the Armed Forces to accommodate ‘actions and speech’ reflecting the conscience, moral, principles or religious beliefs of the member.”
The Obama Administration said the amendment would have a “significant adverse effect on good order, discipline, morale, and mission accomplishment.”
“With its statement, the White House is now endorsing military reprimands of members who keep a Bible on their desk or express a religious belief,” Fleming told Fox News. “This administration is aggressively hostile towards religious beliefs that it deems to be politically incorrect.”
Response: The religious liberty of members in the US military is in the process of being challenged on a number of different fronts by this administration. Particularly conservatives Christians who do not share some of the President’s progressive PC values. In the Starnes article above there are a number of links documenting some recent problems for Christians in the military.
Homosexuality is one of the roots of the current problems when it comes to religious liberty and conscience in the military. Chaplains who do not want to participate in same-sex marriage ceremonies already feel some pressure to adapt or quit and in at least one case a chaplain has actually been demoted.
We have posted a number of articles recently concerning allegations that the religious liberty of Christians in the military was under assault by this administration. The DOD denied those claims but members of Congress overwhelmingly supported John Fleming’s amendment to make sure that the religious rights of military members were protected under the law.
Now President Obama says he ‘strongly objects’ to that amendment and threatens to veto the bill? It does seem to confirm that this President and his administration really do want to challenge the religious freedom and conscience of conservative military members after all. *Top
