-NBC Editor: “Religion is What Mucks the Whole Thing Up…Makes the Holidays So Stressful”

by Dr. D ~ December 13th, 2012

During a panel discussion about Christmas and holiday preparation on Tuesday’s NBC Today Show, the network’s chief medical editor Nancy Snyderman made the following anti-religious rant:

“I don’t like the religion part. I think religion is what mucks the whole thing up….I think that’s what makes the holidays so stressful.”

See the exchange on the following video:

Synderman made her observation after fellow panelist Star Jones explained how she coped with the stress of the Christmas season:

“I focus on, honestly, the religion part of it. I really and truly do. So I can’t out-source that part of it. I can send you to get my tree, but I can’t help – you can’t help me pray.”

When Snyderman launched into her attack on faith, Jones countered:

“That’s the only reason for me to have the holiday….We wouldn’t have the holiday if it wasn’t for the religion part.”

Response: Star Jones is right- there wouldn’t be a holiday in the first place without the ‘religious’ part- Christmas or Hanukkah in particular.

While we are at it- exactly how, like Synderman claims, is the ‘religious part’ making the holidays so stressful? It’s all of the shopping for presents, the decorations, the commercialism, the special holiday events and company celebrations, plus the obligation to fulfill all of the holiday expectations of friends and family that most folks cite as really contributing to all of the stress.

Usually the ‘religious part’ involves one’s personal convictions and a couple of church or temple services at most. It is a tradition in our family to read about the birth of Jesus in the Bible and talk about what Christmas is really all about on Christmas Eve and then attend a late night service.  For me that is the best part of the Christmas season and the least stressful. A time to relax and think about the first Christmas when a humble child was born that would change the world for all time and eternity.            *Top
