On Wednesday a bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (Doma) was introduced by Democrats in the Senate and in the Congress. The bill would result in federal recognition for same–sex marriage by default.

Last month President Obama instructed the Justice Department to cease defending DOMA in several lawsuits presently before the courts. Pro-family groups have criticized Obama for neglecting his duty to defend the federal law.

The sticking issue that many want addressed is the complaint that DOMA disqualifies gay couples from receiving the same federal spousal benefits granted to heterosexual married couples.

Response: It is doubtful that the measure will pass in the GOP dominated Congress. Also those who favor traditional marriage between one man and one woman are encouraging their representatives to write legislation of their own to continue to support traditional marriage.

Now is the time to let your representatives in Congress know where you stand on the issue. It would be better for this to be solved one way or another by legislation rather than by some activist court decision.          *Top
