(Suez Canal via Wikipedia)
A leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt- Muhammad Ghannem told the Iranian news network Al-Alam on Monday that he would like to see the Egyptian people prepare for war against Israel once Mubarak is gone.
He also indicated that they planned to shut down the Suez Canal and stop the flow of oil into Israel:
“The people should be prepared for war against Israel. The Egyptian people are prepared for anything to get rid of this regime.”
Response: This is a chilling reminder of what is at stake when it comes to regime change in Egypt.
The ‘Muslim Brotherhood’ is presented as some kind of moderate group in the West who opposes the Mubarak administration but is only seeking more freedom for the Egyptian people. However Mubarak and the Israelis have long contended that the ‘Brotherhood’ should be listed as a Islamist ‘terrorist’ group.
This gives at least some indication of what can be expected if Mubarak is replaced by a government that the Muslim Brotherhood is involved in. It would add another ‘front’ for the Israelis to be concerned about in case of war and the balance of power would shift considerably in the Middle East.
The flow of oil into Israel is not the only thing at stake if the Suez Canal is shut down or controlled. Much of the oil going into Europe also flows through the canal. Plus $Billions in other trade goods to and from Asia. *Top
