A huge 13 story mosque is being built near ‘Ground Zero’ where the twin towers came down on 9-11-01. The "Cordoba House" mosque is going up in a refurbished 13-story building that was damaged by debris during that terrorist attack.

Relatives of folks who died that day are rather sensitive to the potential mosque and see it as disrespectful. The Muslim organizations sponsoring it say that it is intended to be a bridge to improve relations between Islam and the West.

It is said to represent moderate Muslims according to ASMA (American Society for Muslim Advancement) executive director Daisy Khan:

"We want to create a platform by which the voices of the mainstream and silent majority of Muslims will be amplified. A center of this scale and magnitude will do that. We feel it’s an obligation as Muslims and Americans to be part of the rebuilding of downtown Manhattan."

Response: First of all there is freedom of religion in this country unlike the Muslim dominated Middle East. The Muslims should be able to put up a mosque anywhere they want as long as they adhere to all the building and zoning codes like everyone else.

That being said, it is rather gutsy for them to erect such a large structure near ground zero and the project seems to me to be a rather ‘in your face’ representation of the ‘rise of Islam’ in the West rather than a well thought out project to improve relations.

The whole purpose of the project is actually to ‘advance Islam’ in America which is their right. However to me it is a poor choice and rather despicable for them to do this in the shadow of the ground where over 4,000 died because 19 Muslim terrorists tried to further the Muslim cause on 9/11 in their own radical misguided way.

It is really outrageous that the Muslims involved are not considering the feelings of the relatives and friends of those who died on that terrible day. It really betrays and calls into question their real purposes for the project in the first place.               *Top
