This last week was extremely busy one in the news and nearly unnoticed, New Hampshire became the 6th state to legalize same-sex marriage.
The Governor had originally said that he would not sign the bill unless there was legislation in place to protect religious organizations and churches from being forced to perform or recognize gay marriages. A bill was passed to that effect and New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch signed the gay marriage bill into law this last Wednesday.
The New Hampshire bill takes effect in January, at that point the state will join Iowa, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maine in allowing gay marriage.
Response: The supposed ‘safe-guards’ have been evaluated as practically useless by the Alliance Defense Fund. Legal experts expect those special protection rules to be immediately contested in court. The only real protection afforded by the bill is probably to guard the proverbial backside of a few politicians including the Governor. I hope that I am wrong. *Top
