Slowly but surely new policies are replacing the old. Starting today (May 1), NPR and PBS will no longer carry any religious programming on their affiliate stations. The policies toward federal funding of ‘Faith-Based’ charity groups is also up for some significant changes with the new administration.

While the Bush administration supported faith based groups without forcing them to compromise or substantially change their spiritual mission and allowed religious groups to maintain their own hiring policies. The Obama administration is now setting new hiring policies for all groups that will receive federal funds. During the presidential campaign, Barack Obama said:

“If you get a federal grant, you can’t use that grant money to proselytize to the people you help and you can’t discriminate against them—or against the people you hire—on the basis of their religion.”

Response: I expect that soon a new policy will be in place that does restrict the spiritual mission of faith-based groups who receive funds from the government. Also, the new policy will make it impossible for Christians groups to restrict their hiring based upon religious principals.

Soon these groups can expect to be challenged by gays and atheists who apply for positions as an activist test to the new policies. Christian groups receiving funds will either have to change or accept funds only from churches and private sources once more.

Unfortunately, the Obama administration is also trying to limit tax deductions for contributions to non-profits. So along with the recession, all these groups will be chasing fewer $dollars and some might have to accept more government control just to keep going.           *Top
