On Wednesday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi had a private audience with Pope Benedict. According to reports, the meeting was less than cordial with the Pope taking the opportunity to instruct Rep. Pelosi on the church’s position on abortion and on the “dignity of human life”. Here is the official Vatican statement marking the occasion:

“His Holiness took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of the natural moral law, and the Church’s consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death which enjoin all Catholics, and especially legislators, jurists and those responsible for the common good of society, to work in cooperation with all men and women of good will in creating a just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages of its development.”

Speaker Pelosi had shocked church officials last year when she stated in a television interview that “doctors of the church” disagreed on when life begins and that abortion “continues to be an issue of controversy” in the Catholic Church. In this private meeting the Pope set Pelosi straight on abortion and that there was no disagreement within the church over the issue.

Response: Good luck trying to find a reference to this meeting and particularly the Vatican statement that was issued on the occasion in the American Press!         *Top
