-India: Major Violence Against Christians in 2007

by Dr. D ~ January 10th, 2008

There were over 1,000 incidents of violence against Christians in India in 2007. Most were perpetrated by Hindu radicals, sometimes with the passive permission of the police and political leaders in the villages and areas where the violence occurred. According to Christian leaders:

At least 200 incidents of anti-Christian attacks, including four murders, had been recorded before violence erupted in Orissa’s Kandhamal district that killed at least four Christians and burned 730 houses and 95 churches, according to a report of a fact-finding team released by Christian leaders yesterday (1/8/08).
“In the villages we have visited, people testify that the attacks, destruction and looting was done in the presence of the police.”

Dr. Babu Joseph, the CBCI (Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India) spokesperson said:

“It is a matter of serious concern to the country that violence has been widespread in different parts of the country in general and against the Christians in particular.”

Response: This was a continuing story in 2007. Most of us in America and the Western world are familiar and preoccupied with the violence that Christians face all over the world from Muslim jihadists. It is surprising to most of us that Christians face similar persecution from Hindu radicals.

Although India is supposed to practice and protect ‘freedom of religion’ for its citizens, the radical Hindu political parties are disregarding religious rights in those areas that they control and dominate. Hopefully the central government will begin to take action and preserve the rights of all of its citizens in 2008.             *Top
