Underground Chinese Catholic Bishop Dies in Police Custody

by Dr. D ~ September 12th, 2007

It is reported by the Chinese authorities that Bishop Han Dingxiang was suffering from lung cancer when he died and that they did call his close relatives to the hospital at the end. Nevertheless, they cremated him immediately and buried him in a public cemetery. Church officials are skeptical about his cause of death and question why they were not allowed to bury or conduct services for the Bishop:

“Why were the priests of his diocese not allowed to bless his remains, and together with his faithful, to pray for this heroic shepherd and to view his body? This is not only inhuman and atrocious but also suspicious.”

Bishop Dingxiang had been in prison and later under house arrest and not allowed to have any contact with the Church since 1999.

Comments: This is just a reminder that the Chinese government really does not allow their citizens to have freedom of religion and continues to persecute and imprison church leaders. Yet recently they revealed plans to accommodate the religious needs of visitors coming to the Summer Olympics in Beijing in 2008.             *Top
