Stem Cell Research Battles
by Dr. D ~ June 9th, 2007
Here is a promising report about scientists creating embryonic stem cells without using embryos. This method would make embryonic stem cell research possible while avoiding all of the real ethical and moral dilemmas associated with destroying embryos in the possess. Here is one pro-life reaction found in the article:
It “raises no serious moral problem, because it creates embryonic like stem cells without creating, harming or destroying human lives at any stage,” said Richard Doerflinger, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ spokesman on stem cell issues. In themselves, embryonic stem cells “have no moral status,” and the bishops’ objections to embryonic stem cell research rest solely on the fact that human embryos must be harmed or destroyed to obtain them, Mr. Doerflinger said.
Meanwhile back at the ranch, in this case the US Congress, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is pushing a bill which will provide government funding regular destructive embryonic stem cell research. She is quoted as saying that it is President Bush and Pro-life folks who are the real immoral ones and even claims a ‘Biblical’ imperative for her views:
“Science is a gift of God to all of us and science has taken us to a place that is biblical in its power to cure and that is the embryonic stem cell research.
Nancy turns the whole issue on its ear and ignores the moral problem of killing human embryos in the research process. There is a great article posted on The A-Team Blog on this same issue with some very good responses to Nancy et al. *Top
